What size capsule should I choose?

Which capsule size is best for your needs depends on a few things.

What do you want to put in the capsules, what is the dose required and how many capsules you need to take the dose?

Most people want to be able to use the largest size capsule they can comfortably swallow, and this is the most economical method to save you money when making your own herbal capsules.

Most herbal supplements are commonly packed into size 00 and 0 capsules. As herbal powders are usually prescribed in teaspoon dosage, these capsules are the most time and cost efficient way to make and take them, as they require less capsules per teaspoon volume.

The capsule size volume information is explained below.

Capsule Volumes

#000 - 1.37ml 26mm long Approx 3 capsules per teaspoon.

#00 - 0.9ml 23mm long Approx 5 capsules per teaspoon.

#0 - 0.7ml 21mm long Approx 7 capsules per teaspoon.

#1 - 0.5ml 19mm long Approx 9 capsules per teaspoon.

#2 - 0.4ml 18mm long Approx 11 capsules per teaspoon.

#3 - 0.3ml 16mm long Approx 15 capsules per teaspoon.

#4 - 0.23ml 14mm long Approx 20 capsules per teaspoon.

Where are capsules made?

Contrary to some other Australian website claims, there are no capsule manufacturers in Australia. All empty capsules sold in Australia are manufactured overseas. We source capsules from North America, South America, South East Asia and China.

What are capsules made from?

Capsules are made from animal derived gelatin or vegetable based cellulose or polysaccharides. Both types of capsules are tasteless and odorless. ALL our capsules are gluten free and Halal.

Gelatin capsules can be made from a variety of gelatins from beef, pork and fish, but the overwhelming majority are made to kosher and halal standards to be available to everybody.

The Capsule Guy only source capsules for human consumption made from food grade beef gelatin, BSE free and gluten free.

Vegetable capsules are made from Hypromellose cellulose (HPMC), or pullulan (a plant polysaccharide), both vegetable sourced ingredients, and purified water. Our vegetable based capsules are perfect for our vegetarian, vegan and most ethically-minded consumers.

Are gelatin capsules bad for you?

Absolutely not. Gelatin capsules are made of a protein that we commonly consume in our diet - assuming we are not vegetarians. Gelatin capsules are safe for regular consumption.

The Capsule Guy only sell empty gelatin capsules that are made from food grade beef gelatin and purified water. The gelatin is tasteless, odorless and colorless.

There are a few advantages in taking gelatin capsules. Gelatin has a wide range of health benefits for skin and joint health, and aids absorption of nutrients in the gut. They are also less expensive than vegetable capsules.

What is the difference between joined and separated capsules?

The capsules are the same. Separated capsules means the lids and bodies are in separate bags. This saves you time in having to pull them apart before filling and decrease filling times by up to 30%. All capsules are sold by weight, according to an average weight allocated to each size capsule.

Why do some clear capsules appear cloudy?

Occasionally the clarity of capsules can vary slightly. Capsule clarity can be affected by raw product differences in the manufacturing process. This does not mean the capsules are of a lesser quality or purity.

How Long Will The Capsules Last In Storage?

Capsules stored in clean airtight containers in a dark, dry and cool location, will last for years. Manufacturers recommend storage between 16-25degC and 35-65% relative humidity. Do not store them in the refrigerator as this will create condensation and make them unusable.

Are capsules able to hold liquids?

Hard capsules are designed to hold powdered medicines and herbs. When filled with liquids such as vinegar , capsules will start to soften within around 5 seconds and must be consumed immediately before the capsule begins to disintegrate. Capsules can hold pure oils, such as coconut oil for extended periods. We suggest that you purchase a small amount of capsules and test them with the oil you want to consume.
